THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Malayalee BSF Commandant Jibu D Mathew, who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) with lakhs of rupees in cash at Alappuzha railway station, is an important link of international smuggling racket, the central agency told a CBI court here on Wednesday.
Jibu is closely associated with international smuggler Bishu Sheikh, who is being sought by various central agencies, and the agency his arrest in the CBI special court, which is hearing the bail plea of Jibu.
The court noted that it is a case of serious nature and asked the agency to continue without any pressures.
Jibu had accepted that the money seized from him was the bribe given to him by the smugglers for facilitating various things.
The CBI told the court that Jibu is an important link of smugglers who illegally send money to Bangladesh and Pakistan.
The CBI urged the court not to grant bail to Jibu and sought a detailed investigation on his links with smuggling racket. It said that Jibu helped international smuggling gangs while serving as BSF Commandant on the India-Bangladesh border.
In the chargesheet against Jibu, CBI noted that the cash seized from him was the bribe given by the smugglers.
