Five killed, 3 injured in blast inside ONGC ship at Cochin Shipyard during repairs

KOCHI: Five persons were killed and three others were injured in a blast that occurred at a ship belonged to ONGC in Cochin Shipyard here on Tuesday.

The blast occurred during maintenance work at Sagar Bhushan, the police said.

The injured have been taken to nearby hospital. The deceased have been identified as Kannan and Unni from Ezhoor, Jayan from Thevara, Gavin from Pathanamthitta and Ramshad from Vypin.

Most of them died due to suffocation after fumes filled the ship’s water ballast, where the maintenance work was going on.

City Police Commissioner M P Dinesh said the fire at the site has been doused completely. The primary conclusion is that the blast occurred in a water ballast of the ship.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condoled the death.
