Private bus fares all set to go up in state, final decision today after cabinet meeting

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The private bus operators strike is showing results and the bus fares in the state will be hiked soon, sources said.

The next cabinet meeting slated for Wednesday will give its stamp of approval for the same, sources added.

The Left Democratic Front meeting has already recommended an increase in bus fares.

The government recommendation does not intend to burden the common man and hence the increase would only be marginal, said Transport minister A K Saseendran told mediapersons here on Tuesday after the LDF meeting.

The government would take a final decision after analysing all details relating to the fare hike, he added.

But sources said that the minimum fare in ordinary buses will be increased by Rs 1 from Rs 7 to Rs 8. In Fast Passenger buses, the fare will be increased from Rs 10 to Rs 11.

Private bus owners have been demanding a fare hike followed by the hike in price of diesel and wage of workers.

Justice M Ramachandran Committee had submitted its recommendations to the Chief Minister’s Office which is in charge of the Transport Department earlier.
