THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state cabinet meeting on Wednesday approved a hike in bus fares in the state.
Accordingly, the minimum bus fare will be Rs 8, the earlier fare was Rs 7. There is no change in the bus fare of students.
In Fast Passenger buses, the fare increase is from Rs 10 to Rs 11.
The Left Front had recommended an increase in bus fares after the meeting on Tuesday and the Cabinet approval was just a formality.
The fare hike is given on the basis of various slabs.
Apart from the minimum charge, the fare in ordinary buses will be increased from 64 paise to 70 paise per kilometre.
In fast passenger buses, the bus fare will be raised from 68 paise to 75 paise and in Super-Fast buses the fare will be raised from 77 paise to 85 paise per kilometre.
Separately, the bus owners association has said that the present fare hike in insufficient and it will not be enought to meet the crisis in the sector. Private bus operators have called for an indefinite strike in Kerala from February 16. They demanded that the minimum bus fare should be raised to Rs 10.
