MALAPPURAM: The police has arrested two persons and seized Rs 89.5 lakh of hawala money in Manchery during an operation to check hawala deals in the district on Wednesday.
The duo was arrested during a checking of vehicles at Payyanadu near Manchery after the police got a tip-off of hawala deals.
The arrested persons have been identified as PP Shanavas from Mukkam and Muhammed Amasahood from Koduvally, the police said.
They were part of a chain that distributes hawala money across the state.
The seized notes were from Chennai to Malappuram via Coimbatore, the police said.
The money was hidden under the bonnet of the car in eight packets and one cover in the denominations of Rs 2,000, Rs 500 and Rs 100. There were no papers to prove bonafide of the money.
During the interrogation of the duo, the police got more details about the mafia behind the hawala money.
